Day 5 of 30 Bestselling Book Tips for Writing Your Life Story

It is common when we first start writing to copy the style and voice of other writers, just like a painter replicates great work to learn technique and skill. But it is essential that you find your own voice and share your unique message with the world. Authentic writing developed for me during my dissertation when I had to make an original contribution to the literature. It was the first time in my life that I couldn’t just summarize what other scholars were saying — I had to formulate an opinion and do my own research. This was great training for my memoir writing.

To maintain authenticity in your writing, you must write from a place of personal experience, be really honest, and avoid clichés. When I write, I consistently ask myself: Is that true? I search inside myself for words that reflect my experience and look for places that feel vulnerable. If it makes me uncomfortable to share, it’s probably the most honest telling of the narrative. Being authentic in writing isn’t just about crafting polished prose; it’s about digging deep into your own truth and sharing it with integrity. It’s about embracing the raw, unfiltered aspects of your experience, even if they’re messy or uncomfortable. Authentic writing is a journey of self-discovery and vulnerability, where every word is a reflection of your genuine thoughts and emotions. By staying true to yourself and your experiences, you can create writing that resonates with others on a profound level.

We give our readers a valuable gift when we write with authenticity. We give them permission to own their own story and release any shame that they’ve carried about their experience. Readers send me messages all the time about the emotional release they experience when reading my memoir — they seem themselves reflected in the pages and they feel less alone. It empowers them to rewrite their narratives and find solace in the shared human experience, ultimately fostering healing, growth, and a profound sense of connection.
